DRY BRUSHING 101
We brush our teeth and hair daily, but have you ever thought about adding dry body brushing to your beauty routine? Your body sheds 30,000-40,000 dead skin cells per minute, so by exfoliating your body a few times a week, you will be able to gently remove dead skin cells so that your body can turn over new ones. Dry brushing is what I recommend to all my laser hair removal clients to maximize their results, especially those prone to ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs typically happen when dead skin or something else obstructs the pore and causes the hair to go grow back into the skin, resulting in inflammation.
Lymphatic Support: Your skin is crucial to your health, I mean- it is your body’s largest organ! The lymphatic system is a vital part of the body’s immune system. It is composed primarily of lymph vessels, nodes and tissues. By filtering out toxins, detoxifying and regenerating, this system helps to maintain a healthy immune system and allows the body to heal itself. The lymphatic system tends to be sluggish and needs to be moved often. As many of the body’s lymph vessels run just below the skin, dry brushing regularly can help to stimulate optimal lymph flow within the body and thus detoxify naturally.
Reduce Cellulite: Cellulite is the appearance of cottage cheese skin predominantly seen on the legs, butt, stomach, and back of the arms. Nearly every woman has it, and we all hate it! Cellulite is actually caused by fibrous tissues that run through your fat and pull on the fascia that lies beneath your skin and create a dimpled appearance. This means that it’s not just fat accumulation, but rather the structure of the fat that causes it. Dry brushing helps stimulate the cells and break down toxins from underneath the skin. By flushing out the excess fat from the skin, dry brushing removes the main cause for having cellulite and thus, increases blood circulation. Although, blood circulation also helps other organs release toxins naturally, our skin does not have that additional boost to help rid of toxins itself. Therefore, dry brushing aids in removing toxins inside our body.
So how do you dry brush?
Purchase a natural bristle (not synthetic or plastic) and brush with a long handle so that you can reach all areas of your body. You can typically find them down the bath & body aisle at any drugstore, department or grocery store and even an online store. Spend about 5-10 minutes on dry brushing, and do it 2-5 times a week, preferably before bathing while your skin is dry. Use long, upward strokes in the direction of your heart. Once you’ve brushed your entire body, step into the shower and bathe as you normally would and apply a body lotion or oil afterwards to seal in the moisture!
