Dr. Athré uses several different types of techniques when performing rhinoplasty in his Houston area practice. The two major classes of techniques are closed techniques and open techniques. Many patients come in to our office and ask which type of technique will be used in their particular case. The answer to this question is not always very simple. Dr. Athré performs both open and closed techniques.

A Technique Just For You

The technique Dr. Athré uses is tailored to each patient’s individual considerations and needs. For example, a patient needing a small amount of tip refinement is very different than a patient needing a revision rhinoplasty in the Houston area, or complex reconstructive surgery after multiple traumas. Therefore, Dr. Athré will critically evaluate each patient regarding their needs, their desires, and possible functional considerations along with their cosmetic considerations. This evaluation, performed during the initial rhinoplasty consultation, helps him to determine an appropriate technique for that specific patient.

Closed Technique

There are both advantages and disadvantages to both techniques for our patients considering rhinoplasty. On first look, a patient may think that a closed technique is superior because all of the incisions are within the nose. This is true to a certain extent; however, the closed technique minimizes the amount of visualization when doing the rhinoplasty. Therefore, this technique is perfect for small, simple rhinoplasties.

Open Technique

When a very complicated case presents itself, the open technique is a preferred approach. The open technique utilizes many of the same incisions of the closed technique, however, adds one additional incision at the base of the nose. Some Houston rhinoplasty patients initially are very scared about the fact that there is one exposed incision in this area. However, Dr. Athré has done hundreds of rhinoplasties and this incision heals perfectly every single time. Regardless of the patient’s prior scarring history and/or skin type, this incision becomes practically invisible within 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. The advantage of the open technique is the amount of additional visualization that is possible extremely enhances the operation making results much more standardized and minimizing the chance of needing possible revisions.
