Gynecomastia is a condition in which males develop breast tissue. It can occur in infants, boys, or adult men. The condition is the result of a hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone, according to the Mayo Clinic.
While the condition isn’t a serious health issue, gynecomastia can cause pain in the breasts and may cause embarrassment. Men with gynecomastia report feeling shy or ashamed when they go shirtless in public. They may also avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes that accentuate the condition.
