Botox (Botulinum toxin) Injections

I’m sure you have heard of Botox before, but do you know what Botox is and why it is beneficial to the anti-aging process among many other benefits. Botox is the name brand by Allergan for a product that is made from a toxin produced by bacterium Clostridium Botulinum, there are many other alternatives out there although Botox is the most popular. So what does Botulinum toxin do exactly? It is a neuromodulator that acts directly on motor neurons to reduce muscle activity/freeze muscle activity. Botox is FDA approved since 2002 for cosmetic use but has been around for all types of treatments since the 80’s.

So why should you get Botox for Cosmetic reasons?

Botox is going to be the best anti-aging preventative because when injected, it works to block any signals from the nerves which will tell the muscles to contract, so in turn when those signals are blocked the muscles do not contract. If the muscles are not contracting and are “frozen” then you are not making movements that cause wrinkles and fine lines. When you inhibit the movement of those muscles then you prevent making new wrinkles or making existing wrinkles any deeper, the repetitive movement of the skin is what causes wrinkles. If you slow down the use of these muscles early, then you can prevent deep lines from developing. There is no set age on when you should start Botox but using it as a preventative before any signs of aging appear is recommended.

The results of Botox are not immediate and can take up to 14 days for it to freeze up and results can last up to 3 months, we suggest, for best results, to come in every 3-4 months. Side effects of Botox are minimal but not inevitable for example; bruising, redness and bumps. Try to avoid any blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, St. johns wart, fish oil or omega-3s. After treatment try to avoid any exercise, hot showers, saunas and anything that may cause an increase in circulation. Do not apply pressure or rub the area treated.
