What is Botox injections. How common are botox side effects

Botox is most commonly known for smoothing frown lines and crow’s feet, but Scientists continue to find more applications for the flexible substance. Wrinkle prevention is one of the top un-sung qualities of Botox.

When injected into muscles, Botox prevents them from contracting. As it’s usually used in the face, that means Botox prevents muscles that form wrinkles and shadows between the eyebrows and at the comers of the eyes from contracting. This quality both reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles and when administered earlier in life, prevents them from forming in the first place. Doctors can cause other effects by injecting Botox, or onabaulinumtoxinA, in other areas.

Adults with chronic migraines have found relief with Botox injections in muscles in the head and neck. Chronic migraines are defined as 15 or more headache days in a month, with each headache lasting at least 4 hours. In studies, Botox was found to reduce headache days by up to nine. For adults with significant, frequent headaches, this is a major improvement.

Scientific American reported that an initial study shows Botox may help treat depression. In the study, individuals resistant to anti-depression medication were instead given a traditional Botox treatment to prevent frowning in the forehead. Those

injected with Botox showed a 47 percent decrease in depression symptoms, as opposed to 9 percent of those injected with a placebo. More study is needed, but the current theory is that negative facial expressions may help contribute to negative feelings, not just communicate them. By preventing those facial expressions, Botox stopped the feedback signal coming back to the brain.

Individuals experiencing overactive bladder have also found help by using Botox. In this treatment, Botox is injected into the muscles of the bladder to reduce uncontrolled contraction and increase the holding capacity of the bladder.
