How long is a CoolSculpting treatment?

Each treatment area generally takes 35 minutes to 45 minutes depending on which applicator is being used. Most patients have multiple areas treated during a visit.

How long do the results last?

CoolSculpting is a contouring treatment and is designed to permanently reduce fat storage in a problematic area. Once fat cells have been treated with CoolSculpting, up to 25% of the fat cells are permanently damaged, and then naturally eliminated from the body over a 12 week period.

What does the treatment feel like?

With certain applicators and in certain treatment areas a pulling, tugging, or mild pinching sensation can be felt during the procedure but is tolerable. Once the cooling of the fat below the skin begins you may feel some intense coldness which will go away as the area starts to feel numb. Most people pass their time by reading, watching videos, working on their laptop, or even taking a nap. Once the treatment is over we massage the treated area for a few minutes and you may feel intense cold, stinging, aching, and cramping over the area, this goes away after a few minutes.

What side effects may happen?

Side effects can vary from person to person.

Some sensitivity in the treated areas is normal and may include – redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, firmness and some temporary discoloration of the skin. Most people will experience these normal side effects for about two to four weeks after treatment and they resolve on their own.

Rare side effects may include:

Paradoxical hyperplasia – Rarely the treated area can become enlarged because of swelling of tissue. This would occur two to five months after the treatment and may require surgical treatment.

Subcutaneous generalized hardness or nodules can develop in the treatment area and may be uncomfortable. These do resolve over time.

Dizziness, light headiness, nausea, flushing, sweating and fainting may occur during or immediately after your CoolSculpting session. This is known as a Vasovagal attack and resolves on its own.

Rare cases of late onset pain can occur in the treated area, (typically the abdomen) and is controlled with medication if needed.

Who is not a candidate for CoolSculpting?

If you have cold induced syndromes such as cryoglobulinemia, paroxysmal cold hemoglobin urea, Reynaud’s Disease or poor circulation.

CoolSculpting is not for weight-loss or weight-management. .

CoolSculpting should not be used around areas of hernias as it may worsen hernias.
